Cortana is the Windows equivalent of iPhone Siri or the Amazon Alexa type service, and it is built into Windows 10.
Cortana can be very useful. For example, you can ask Cortana to look up information, do simple calculations, or even shutdown your PC.
Press Windows key + C to get Cortana to listen to you.
You can change the settings so that Cortana is listening all the time for you to ask a “Hey Cortana” question. But the keyboard shortcut is a better option because it gives you more control, and it uses less battery power on portable devices.
There are several things that need to be in place in order to use Cortana in this way:
- You need to switch on the keyboard shortcut in the Cortana settings.
- Cortana is cloud-based, so you need to be online.
- Cortana works best when you are signed in to your Microsoft account.
- As with the Dictation tool, it only works with certain languages, so you may need to switch. For example, it does not work with English (Ireland), but does work with English (UK). Follow this link to learn more about language settings.
