Superscript and subscript are special ways of formatting text in Word.
Superscript text appears slightly above and with reduced size than the standard text around it, and is used for things like powers, as in x squared where the 2 is smaller and higher than the x, and in dates, as in 18th December, where the TH is smaller and higher than the 18.
Subscript text appears slightly lower and with reduced size than the standard text around it, and is generally used to indicate a foot note.
To set text as superscript, select the text and press Control + Shift + Plus Sign.
To set text as subscript, select the text and press Control + Equals Sign.
In both cases, to change back to normal text, press relevant shortcut again.
