Mark Email Messages as Read or Unread in Gmail

When email messages are unread in Gmail, they are displayed in bold font and screen reading software announces that they are unread. The email message changes to normal text in the Inbox when the message has been opened.
Some people, including me, use marking as unread to indicate that an email message needs further attention.
To mark as unread in the Inbox, select the message by pressing X, then press Shift + U.
To mark as read in the Inbox, select the message by pressing X, then press Shift + I.
You can also use these shortcuts in the email message itself.
Open the email, press Shift + U, and you will go back to the Inbox with the email message marked as unread.
The same works with marking as read, but that happens automatically anyway when you open an email message.
Note: If you use a screen reader, you may need to switch the “virtual cursor” off so you can use Mark as Read/Unread shortcuts. Press Insert (or Caps Lock) + Z in JAWS or Insert (or Caps Lock) + Space in NVDA and Narrator.
Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox work the same as Google Chrome for markingĀ email messages as read/unread in Gmail.
