The most common use of F4, certainly for us at Sharon’s Shortcuts, is Alt + F4 which will close any application completely.
Control + F4 will close the current document in Microsoft Word or the current spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel or the current Tab in a browser (without closing the application).
F4 on its own has a different function in different applications:
- In Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel, F4 repeats the last action.
- In Windows Explorer, F4 moves to the address bar.
- In Microsoft Excel, when editing a formula or function, F4 switches between an absolute and relative cell reference.
