There are ways of zooming in and out without opening Windows Magnifier.
Mouse users can magnify the screen by holding the Control key and using the mouse wheel. This works in most applications, including changing the size of icons on the Desktop.
In Web browsers, you can use Control + Plus sign/Minus sign to zoom in and out of a Web page (respectively). And you can restore to the standard size by pressing Control + Zero (0).
In Office applications, you can change the zoom level by pressing Alt + W for the View Ribbon and then pressing Q. This gives you options of percentage zoom, page width (in Word), selection (in Excel), etc.
