Files and folders in Windows are stored as a hierarchical structure, like branches of a tree. You can press Enter to open a selected folder, and this starts you down a branch of the structure. But you may need to come back up and visit another branch. Use Backspace or Alt + Left Arrow to visit recently viewed folders, and Alt + Up Arrow to go back up the branch (to the parent folder).
